ARISE belongs to a specific period in my journey.
It is a vision developed between 2011 and 2013, born from the need to translate Greek mythology into scenographic and dramatic images.
Today I look at it as one looks at a distant time — with distance, yet with respect. In that work, the control of light, the construction of the set and the compositional rigor that would later define my practice first took shape.
It is not a point of arrival.
It is a threshold.
Project Note (2011–2013)
ARISE began in the spring of 2011 as a photographic project dedicated to Greek mythology and to the representation of female deities as archetypes, rather than illustrative narratives.
The initial intention to realize the work directly in Greece was abandoned after an exploratory journey revealed the impossibility of reconstructing places that had never truly existed — spaces tied more to symbolic construction than to historical geography. The project thus evolved into a scenographic investigation developed entirely in the studio.
Over five months, complex architectural sets were constructed using physical structures and scenic materials to recreate environments inspired by classical antiquity. The shooting sessions took place between September 2011 and August 2012, involving more than twenty models selected in relation to the mythological figure they were to embody.
The post-production phase, meticulous and rigorous, ensured the visual coherence of the entire corpus.
ARISE marks the point of origin of the artistic path that would later define the visual identity of Tristan Dark.
“Tristan Dark’s images dedicated to Greek mythology reveal a rare dramatic strength and a remarkable formal control. Historical research, theatricality, and the quality of the technical execution give rise to visions of profound expressive impact.”
